Authentic Resources of High Interest Topics

One of our goals this year will be to engage students via their own personal interests. At the beginning of the year we will give students a survey to gauge their interests in a variety of topics including sports, tv, music, and celebrities. From that point we will be using revista tu portada de Justinauthentic resources to allow our students access to the language in these high interest topics.

Last year we mentioned websites of several teen magazines in Spanish. And during our recent travels we were able to purchase some of these magazines. Some of them contained some very useful back to school articles. Below are some articles talking about back to school.

America is a Continent

I decided to spread my influence outside my classroom this year and take on a bit of the hallway. I created the following display, featuring “Todos Somos América,” with an outline of North and South America and pictures of various families from these lands.

I used 4 black posterboard (bought at dollar store for $0.69 each) and used our school’s laser cutter for the stenciled letters and continent shapes.
I searched flickr for pictures of families from Hispanic Speaking countries and then ordered prints of those pictures from Walgreens (20 photos for $4.00).
I then laminated the top and bottom 2 and hung then up with sticki-clips before taping the two sides together.
I had some small flag stickers that I posted on the pictures of where the family was from and also on the continent of where that country was located.

I also have added flags (and some scarves) next to it as well using my method for hanging up items.

With the title “Todos Somos América” my goal is for students to realize that “America” is not just a country, but an entire continent filled with many different cultures. This is all part of my goal to make students look at things from a different perspective.

Capitan America o Capitan USAI just love this comic. I have it printed in my classroom, but will probably print it again and put in the hallway.
I also enjoy this “upside down America” map to look at things from a different perspective.

Silencing the Talking Taco

I happened to take a look at some of the products a popular Spanish-teacher catalog wsilencing the talking tacoas promoting. As someone who enjoys not only the language, but the culture of the Spanish-speaking world I was embarrassed by what I have seen in my profession. The number of stereotypical imaging used on the products was considerable. I can’t even tell you how many maracas, chile peppers, burritos, and tacos that I came across.

Now some of you may find these images “cute” and think I’m just being grumpy (I did see a lot of that reaction to this image on pinterest). Maybe these items are targeted for an elementary audience, where “cute” is appropriate, but I’ve seen teachers in secondary levels using these types of images as well. And I’ll be honest, I’ve been guilty of this too. We want to “spice up” a worksheet or document with clipart and without many options we choose something arbitrary, such as a piñata. However, if this is what we expose our students to, we are perpetrating these stereotypes. I want my students to see these countries for the beautiful things that they offer. I don’t want them to associate the Spanish language with a taco. Every taco is not created equal. And if your students think Taco Bell is representative of Mexico, then we are failing them.stereotypicalspanishShare your thoughts below.

Update: We’d like to highlight some clipart that teachers can use that are culturally rich. Check out these amazing sets of clipart for Spanish class including Powerpoint backgrounds that respect the culture!

And for further reading on the harmfulness of stereotypical images, read this article.

Commands

We recently worked on commands in Spanish 1 in our giving advice unit. One way I grabbed attention is by creating a powerpoint slide with pictures of myself and then creating 2 other versions. I then typed in some “advice” that my “teacher-conscience” would make.

Here’s a version with the Teacher Meme character:
Spanish Teacher Mandatos
I took a regular picture of myself for the normal picture and picture with a grumpy face and a picture with an innocent looking face. I then used the powerpoint “Shapes” to create a halo and red triangles for horns. Or if you are tech savy, you can insert a transparent picture of thorns. With the speech bubbles (available in the ‘shapes’ options) I made the dialogue with the advice.

For an assignment/assessment, I tasked students with creating their own struggle of conscience between good and evil by using a character and giving commands relevant to that character.
Here are some samples: Continue reading

Perspective

perspective¿Quién tiene la razón?
¿Cómo es posible que los dos tengan razón?

One of the most important tasks outside of language learning that world language teachers face is to make our students aware of the world outside their community. To battle their sheltered lifestyle, I try to have them realize that some things can be different in other countries and to have them embrace these differences rather than judge them.

At the beginning of the year, I talk with my students about the word “perspective” and perspectiva globalwhat that means, which is a cross-over from their social studies curriculum. One example I give them is what we refer to as the “US-Mexican War” is referred to as the “US Invasion” in México. The title alone shows how the event is viewed in each country.

They are super surprised when I ask them ¿Cúantos continentes hay? and when they respond with seven I tell them they are wrong. From the perspective of Latin America there are only 5. Check out this video and see. Continue reading

Language Acquisition

During my time on Twitter, I’ve ‘favorited’ some great tweets. And when I remember to go and read them, some are still very inspirational. The following tweets are great quotes on Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Teaching Methods.spanish teaching advice

learn grammar from languageobjective in FL class

teach the language not about the language

you can conjugate can you communicate we dont use vocab lists textbook conversations are fake teach your way

youtube search offers great input  teach in the language  edit the task not the text dont teach badly to prepare for bad teaching

Read how to use twitter as your own Professional Development, so you can start following the above people.

This original comic goes: “I see you did well in school. But what real world skills do you have?” and the interviewee replies, “Tests. I can take tests”. I modified this social commentary on our educational system’s focus and applied it to foreign language skills.

Comida Autentica

On of my favorite units is teaching the Food Unit. I love sharing the unique flavors of Latin Comida Autentica PowerpointAmerica with my students. During the beginning of the unit, I have a “Comida del día” that I have described on the powerpoint along with their daily bellringer questions. We discuss the food and its origin.

Hispanic Comida Bulletin BoardTo help students identify these foods and create a lasting impressions I recently created a Bulletin Board of Authentic Hispanic Foods including Pictures and Labels. Each are only $1.00 and ready to print or use immediately in class.

Comida Bulletin Board

In another section of the room, I took this document (which you can download for free) and enlarged it on our school’s poster maker. As we talked about the foods, many students were eager to try these foods or had already tried them. The students would write their name under that item and write a smiley face if they liked it or frowny face if they didn’t.

Yo he probado firme si has probado
Me Gusta No me gusta

Don’t forget to check out our other Comida related posts.

What’s your favorite food from the Spanish Speaking world?
