Location Words: Prepositions in Spanish

One of my favorite lesson! Very interactive and engaging.

Teaching students prepositions of location through a song with gestures.

Then, have students apply their learning in an communicative activity.

Students sit across from their partner. One student has a picture (9 pictures are provided) and they must speak entirely Spanish to describe it to their partner. The other partner draws. When they are done, the drawer can look at the original picture to see how accurate the description or their understanding was. They then switch roles with a new picture.

I am always amazed at how great my early level Spanish students are able to apply their vocabulary and knowledge and describe a picture accurately to their partner.

Ser and Estar

Teaching Ser and Estar (level 1) through a 19 page document. Included are an ID badge, guided notes packet, over four pages of worksheets, and a quiz. Answers to guided notes included.

Your students will finally understand the difference between SER and ESTAR through a clever acronym theme used throughout the lesson.

This unit is spelled out to make it easy for students to understand. Don’t leave yourself with all the questions kids have when they hear “temporary” vs. “permanent” – this lesson uses a method that explains WHEN to use ser and WHEN to use estar.

The age old question “To be or Not to Be” is finally answered with this lesson plan.

Practicing Vocabulary

When learning vocabulary, or to study for a quiz, one of the most common practices has been to make flashcards. This is done in foreign language classes, English classes, and other classes where learning vocabulary is necessary.

Some teachers require their students to make flashcards. One way to do it, is to have the the word on one side and the definition on the other. For learning Spanish, the English word on one side and the Spanish vocab word on the other. It is also effective to put the Spanish word on one side and a picture on the other side. That way, the student is associating the Spanish word with the actual item, and not just another word.

There are numerous other ways to practice vocabulary and spelling. Elementary teachers know all about teaching spelling. Some put shaving cream on the desks and have the students write with their fingers. This may not be ideal for older classrooms. I have the students choose from 16 different activities to practice their vocabulary. I have divided them into 3 sections. A 5 point section, a 10 point section, and a 15 point section, depending on their difficulty or helpfulness in studying. The students must do 20 points total of practice and can complete those 20 points with any combination. four 5-point activities, a 15 and a 5, two tens. This can be used for any foreign language class.

Student’s have commented that doing this really helps them learn the words. You will see quiz scores rise as students take responsibility in actually practicing their spelling and meaning of the vocabulary.

Spanish Bell Ringers

I use a quick Bell Ringer (Bell Work)  at the beginning of every period to get the kids started with Spanish as soon as they enter the room. If they have homework, the teacher can check the homework while students are working.  I then go over the answers to the bell ringer, and then we go over the homework before we start the new day’s lessons. It’s best if the bell ringer is short and quick. They should be related to the last day’s vocabulary or grammar concept, or give the students a chance to use their notes.

I handout a sheet where the students write the date and the answers to that day’s bellringers. Or you can have students dedicate a section of their notebook. You can choose to collect this at the end of the week and grade it if you choose.

Some other teachers have call their Bellringers or Bell Work: “Caliente su mente” “La Campañita” “TocaTimbre” “Para Empezar”
